The Blue
Card EU
There are various possibilities
to obtain a residence permit
for employment purposes in
Germany. Especially, when
the employment is of a
highly qualified type, there
are several options.
In May 2009 the European Council
decided on a directive to regulate the
conditions of entry and residence of
third-country nationals for the purpose
of highly qualified employment to
conform conditions within the EU
(Directive 2009/50/EC).
On 1st August 2012 the German
implementation law for the EU Council
Directive on the conditions of entry and
residence of third-country nationals
for the purposes of highly qualified
employment came into force. This law
introduced the Blue Card EU as a new
residence permit, § 19a Aufenthaltsgesetz
(AufenthG).
The Blue Card EU will be issued for an
initial maximum period of four years. If
the duration of the employment contract
it’s based on is less than four years,
