Additionally to the USV and the LTV a
so-called National Visa or a Visa of the
category “D” can be obtained. This visa is
granted to people who are to be working
or studying in a member state or who are
permanently residing in one of the states.
It allows the holder to either a single
entry or multiple entries, depending on
the individual circumstances. The criteria
that must be met to obtain a National Visa
limit the applicant to pedagogical work at
a higher institution or research center or
the sharing of some kind of professional
expertise such as sports or arts besides
studying. The validity is usually set at one
year with the possibility of an extension if
the purpose for the visa calls for it.
In conclusion, once any one of the
multiple-entry visas is obtained, the
holder is free to travel in and out of the
Schengen area as often as he or she
wants as long as the stays do not amount
to more than 90 days in a 180 day period
in the span of the validity of said visa.
That way the holder doesn’t have to
acquire a new visa and more importantly
go through the whole application process
every time he or she has to travel to one
of the Schengen countries and therefore
drastically cutting the preparation time
for a business trip, for example.
