bachelor‘s degrees and experts in certain
professional groups. The health sector
especially nursing care for the old and
the sick - is severely affected by the
shortage of skilled workers. The demand
for nursing care for the old in particular
will continue to rise as the general
population ages. But there is also a lack
of qualified staff for occupational groups
that require technical or manual training.
In addition to doctors, there is also a
shortage of engineers and computer
scientists in the expert area - important
occupational groups that are helping to
shape Germany‘s economic future.
Areas particularly affected by shortages
of skilled labor include:
- Academic occupational groups in
the fields of medicine, engineering
in mechanical engineering and vehicle
construction, electrical engineering,
supply and disposal technology, IT and
software development/programming,
MINT (mathematics, computer science,
natural sciences and technology).
- Craft: Electrical installation and assembly,
pipe installation, machining technology,
tool mechanics, plastics processing, pipe
network construction/pipe fitting, welding
technology, mechanical engineering.
- Nursing care: Health care, nur-
sing and old people‘s care.
What is the motivation for skilled workers
to come to Germany?
In the future, the Federal Republic of
Germany should also become significantly
more successful in „attracting qualified
specialists from third countries“.
Specifically, the grand coalition wants
to do without the priority check, for
example. Companies will therefore no
longer be obliged to prove that there are
no preferred German nationals available
for an offered job before they employ a
non-EU foreigner. For foreign skilled
workers, this means easier immigration.
Employers will make job advertisements
more attractive in the future.
How many visa applications were there
in 2018 from skilled workers?
In the first half of 2018, 65,755 persons
were given a residence permit for the
purpose of employment. This was
significantly more than in the same
period of the previous year (+10,451
persons or +18.9%).
As in years before, the largest part
of this was accounted for by persons
with a residence permit for qualified
employment in accordance with § 18 (4)
AufenthG (+2,970 to 29,019 persons;
+11.4%).
75.8 % of these came to Germany before
2018. With 18,563 persons, significantly
more persons (+3,681 or +24.7 %
compared to the same period of the
previous year) received a residence
permit in accordance with § 18 (3)
AufenthG for the purpose of employment
that does not require qualified vocational
training.
In the second half of 2018, a residence
permit was issued for the purpose of
employment for an outstanding number
of 31,604 people.
A total of 97,359 persons applied for a
visa for employment in 2018.
